Tiny Living: Furniture for Small Spaces

Most of us think just because we have a small space that we need to fill it with super small furniture and small décor...and there is some truth to that.  Often, however, the smaller the pieces, the more you have and the busier the room starts to get, almost to the point of being cluttered.  When we are designing a small space, we are thinking storage, extra seating, maximum traffic flow and scale. Here are a few easy ways to maximize your space:
A small scale sofa can trick the eye into looking larger by changing the seat cushion configuration from a 2 or 3 cushion to a 1 cushion sofa. And, most of these smaller scale sofas come as sleepers, again becoming multi-purpose.

Chairs can also be a creative way to open up a small space.  Instead of doing a club chair that is fully upholstered, consider an open wood frame chair.  These chairs are still very comfortable and also add a lot of interest to a space without leaving as big of a footprint.

Occasional tables that nest or have storage are crucial when it comes to small areas. This will allow you to tuck items away when they aren’t being used, avoiding clutter. Coffee and end tables can be multi-functional, save on space and look amazing!

Large scale artwork in a small space is key. Why? Less is best in these cases. When you see an oversized piece of art, it can be more intriguing than a cluster of art and actually opens up the space by simplifying it.
